<dc:description xml:lang="en">Greenfield exploration during the 1970s to 1980s has revealed tungsten enrichment in various geological units of the Eastern Alps. This dataset is the result of the W Alps Project, a study, which aims to develop assessment criteria (fingerprints) for the evaluation of regional tungsten potentials in the Eastern Alps based on mineralogical and chemical criteria from 17 of these tungsten discoveries, including the world-class Felbertal tungsten deposit. Scheelite is the most common tungsten mineral in the Eastern Alps and was investigated by combined cathodoluminescence imaging, electron probe microanalysis and in-situ laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry.</dc:description>
<dc:description xml:lang="en">Trace elements in scheelite were determined in the LA-ICP-MS laboratory at the Institute of Mineralogy at University of Münster, Germany. Analyses were performed on a Thermo Fisher Element XR HR-ICP-MS coupled to a Teledyne Photon Machines Analyte G2 193 nm ArF-based excimer laser ablation system. Most of the analyses were measured with a spot diameter of 40 μm (20 μm only for fine-grained scheelite from Gstoder) at 10 Hz with an energy of ca. 4 J/cm2 for 40 s. The gas blank was previously determined for 20 s and sample washout was set to 15 s. Argon and helium gas flow, torch position and focusing potentials were adjusted by ablating the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) 612 reference material to obtain optimal signals on La and Th but a low oxide content (ThO/Th < 0.05%).Blocks of reference material were measured after 25-40 analyses on the unknown samples. The NIST 612 glass was used as reference material for calibration to correct the time-dependent drift of sensitivity and mass discrimination of the instrument. Reference materials for quality control included glass standards GSD-1G, GSE-1E and three matrix-matched in-house reference materials from the Felbertal deposit (Scheelite-A, Scheelite-B and Scheelite-S). All measurements on reference materials and unknowns were normalized to 43Ca as the internal standard before calibration for scheelite analysis. Calcium contents in scheelite were determined prior to LA-ICP-MS analyses using EPMA at the same spots.Offline data processing and evaluation of trace element contents was carried out using the G.O.Joe software (https://www.gojoe.software). The values marked with two asterisks (**) were corrected for interferences on the masses of Ta and Re caused by abundance sensitivity. The results were filtered to remove analyses with internal 2 standard error of the corresponding median of the signal and the threshold filter was set to 25% (see G.O.Joe website for more information).</dc:description>
<dc:description xml:lang="en">These published data are part of the project "MRI W Alps" that aims to develop assessment criteria (e.g., trace elements) for the evaluation of regional tungsten potentials in Austria. The series comprises a consistent set of geochemical, mineralogical and geological data from different types of tungsten mineralization in the Eastern Alps and provides the basis for defining prospective regions for tungsten.</dc:description>
